Run History Cleaner

“When I start the "run" window and type in the first letter of a command, a huge list of files or web addresses starting with that letter appears. Does anyone know how to clear this history? I don't even know what it's properly called. Please help!”

Many items in Windows Operating System use the MRU (Most Recently Used) List to keep lists of filenames, commands, etc. The Run command too, in the Start Menu maintains a list of the commands you have entered. This list helps in avoiding retyping the recently used commands. But there are some situations when you need to remove the Run history for security purpose, as you don’t want to reveal your recent activities.

Where is the Run MRU (Most Recently Used) List?

Before knowing the process to clear Run history, you need to know the location of this MRU list. The RUNMRU list is saved in the Windows Registry in the following location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ RunMRU\

It includes each and every command that you type in the Run dialog box along with a key called MRUList which keeps the order in which the commands appear in the list.

In order to delete the Run history, open Registry Editor, go to the registry key and right click on the command that you wish to remove and press delete. Now close the Registry Editor and restart the computer. You will see that the Run history has been cleaned.

Another method of removing Run history is by following the steps below –

  1. Open Taskbar and Start Menu Properties by clicking the Start button
  2. Open Control Panel
  3. Click on Appearance and Personalization, and then click Taskbar and Start Menu
  4. Select the Start Menu tab, and then under Privacy tab, uncheck the “Store and display a list of recently opened programs” check box.
